How much Gold I can carry from Dubai to India? Custom Duty and limit of Gold Import - Full Guide

It is very common in Indian to convert their saving into Gold as Gold is guarantee for safe and good return of investment.

Dubai is famous not for their iconic Buildings but also for its trade of good quality gold among the Indians. Most of Indians were used to buy gold from Dubai and carry to India with them that was a very bad impact on their local market of Gold in India.

This is the reason India Custom department limits the Gold Import from Dubai to India.

Famous Deira Souk market is the main market of Gold retail from where most of foreigners buy the Gold and diamonds.

Duty free Gold Limit:


As per the central board of Indirect taxes and Customs any Indian who is living abroad more than one year is eligible to carry some of gold that is free from Custom duty. Here are the points that clear about that:

  • Gold Jewellery not more than 20 grams and not value more than AED 50,000 is exempted from the custom duty for the male passenger.
  • Gold Jewellery not more than 40 grams and not value more than AED 100,000 is exempted from the custom duty for the female passenger.

Indian living abroad and carrying gold to India should keep in mind that the imported gold should be in form of Jewellery and not in form of gold coins or biscuits/bar.

The duty free gold limits applicable for children also who are living abroad more than one year.

Import Gold limit with custom Duty:


As per the Central board of Indirect taxes and customs any Indian living abroad more than six months can carry Gold up to 1 kg in check in baggage but they have to pay the custom duty at the entry point of any Indian Port.

The custom duty 12.5% + Social Welfare surcharge 1.25% will be applicable and they have to pay at the Airport.

Calculation of total six months from short 30 days visits is not allowed under this category.

If you are not completing total six months of stay abroad than the custom Duty will be 36.05%


Import Limit for Silver in India:


Any Indian passport holder can import maximum 10 kg of Silver with him in check in baggage.

The minimum stay abroad is six months than the custom duty will be charged 12.5% +1.25% Social welfare Surcharge.


Important Note: Import of Gold or Silver by foreigners is not allowed.
